"Studying here has been everything I hoped for and more."
My name is Silvia Duffy. I’m originally from La Paz, Bolivia, and now I live in Silver Spring, MD. I started college in Bolivia, studying for a bachelor’s degree in psychology. About halfway through, my family and I moved to the United States. For many years, I had to put my education on hold while I worked several jobs at once, and later got married. During this time, I enrolled in my local community college, and tried several times to start studying again. But I wasn’t confident enough to feel like I could succeed in my classes.
A few years ago, my husband encouraged me to focus all of my time and energy on school. He told me that even if I did not ultimately succeed, at least I would know I tried. I started taking classes, which I had been afraid to take before, such as English, speech, biology and statistics. And I was able to do well in all of them, even making the dean’s list several times. I studied and studied, often late into the night. And with each class I passed, I grew more confident that I could also pass the next one. After about another year at community college, I received my associate degree. Although I was proud of achieving that, I knew I wanted to go further. For a time, I seriously considered studying nursing as I had trained and worked as a medical assistant for several years prior. But in the end, I decided to come back to my original interest that I had started in Bolivia: psychology.
I researched several schools, both in person and online, before deciding on SNHU. I remembered that a counselor at my community college had strongly recommended SNHU, so I decided to try it. I was nervous at first, because up to that point I had only taken one online class. My SNHU advisor was very helpful in getting me started and feeling comfortable. I have taken two classes so far. Now I am in the middle of my third, and it’s been a great experience so far. My professors have been very helpful, and the forum format has been very useful in interacting with other students, and learning new things. I am now on the final path to getting my bachelor’s degree, and I am so grateful that SNHU has given me that chance! Studying here has been everything I hoped for and more. I’ve been able to adjust well to online courses, and there is no doubt in my mind that I will graduate here.
