"Going to school online definitely isn't easy, but it was the best decision that I have ever made, and I wouldn't change it."
I first went to college at a private university in New York. I have always loved science, but the clinical science major was just too tough for me. I was miserable. Additionally, I felt like I wasn't getting enough from my classes, and more importantly, from my professors. I would go to 8:00 am classes for two hours, sit there, and be taught what I had already learned from my books the night before. I have never learned well from having someone lecture at me. I've always been a hands-on, independent learner.
That summer I was sitting on the couch one day when I saw a commercial for SNHU, and decided to look into it. Being able to do everything online and take my classes with me wherever I go was perfect for me—especially because I didn't know where my life was going!
My boyfriend had just graduated from a private university, and we had no idea what would happen during the summer in regards to a job offer. In August, my boyfriend ended up with a job in California, which is where I am currently. I'm working and going to school, which is exactly what I wanted. Working a couple hours a week in college before just wasn't enough for me. I love to work and now I can actually have a job and continue to complete my degree.
Some days it's definitely a challenge to make sure I get everything done, but I'm happy in my BS in Sport Management program. Although I won't be done with school for another several years, I would rather do it this way—my own way—than be stuck in a school where I am not learning anything and miserable.
The advisors I have worked with at SNHU along the way have been extremely helpful—particularly my new student advisor who helped when I was trying to apply. It's been a challenge, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've actually recruited a couple of my friends because they wanted a similar academic experience. Going to school online definitely isn't easy, but it was the best decision that I have ever made, and I wouldn't change it.
