Academic Spotlight: Director of Health Information Management Dr. Lynn Ward

Dr. Lynn Ward, health information management program director at SNHU. Dr. Lynn Ward is Southern New Hampshire University’s (SNHU) Health Information Management (HIM) program director. Having earned degrees in business, healthcare administration and education, Ward brings to her position experience in a variety of management roles within the HIM industry.

Recently she answered questions about her professional background, how she connects with students and more.

Can you tell us about your professional background?

For the past 9 years, I have served as Health Information Management program director. Before 2016, I served as the Health Information Management program director at Montana State University for 10 years. Before my academic career, I served in various management roles within the health information management profession.

What first drew you to higher education?

After having my second child, I decided to become a stay-at-home mom. To supplement the family income, I started teaching courses at the local community college. This quickly turned into teaching four courses per semester, almost a full-time teaching load. Since academia was a good fit and niche, I then sought out full-time remote teaching positions.

What aspects of your own education have been influential in shaping your career in academia?

Both my master's and doctorate degrees are from online programs. Having a doctorate in education with a concentration in curriculum and teaching helps me lead two accredited programs at SNHU.

What attracted you to this field of study? What keeps you excited about it?

Knowing working as a direct caregiver was not something I was interested in, but loving healthcare, HIM seemed like a great fit. HIM is constantly changing, so there are always knew things to learn.

How have you found ways to effectively connect with students?

The HIM program offers several live synchronous sessions to students. Every term an online virtual program orientation is held for both programs. I also host a Meet the Program Director session once a term. Twice a term Registered Health Information Administration exam review sessions are held, which I leads.

What brings you the greatest joy in your work at SNHU?

Watching students grow into HIM professionals and successfully passing the certification exam.

What does SNHU’s mission to transform the lives of learners mean to you?

Providing accessible learning through innovation and student-centered support.

Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or really enjoy doing?

Volunteering is an important way to give back to the community. Having held several volunteer positions with American Health Information Management Association in the past, and serving on the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s Emerging Healthcare Leaders task force in 2025 are examples of my volunteer work.
