Academic Spotlight: Mrinalini D. Kale, Associate Dean Overseeing Marketing Programs

Mrinalini D. Kale, associate dean overseeing marketing programs at SNHU.

As the associate dean overseeing marketing programs at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Mrinalini D. Kale views education through an empathetic lens and is committed to supporting student success.

Kale earned her Master of International Management with a concentration in International Marketing from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and later completed her PhD in Business Management at Capella University.

Kale recently answered questions about the start of her career, her move into higher education and how she connects with students.

Can you tell us about your professional background?

My professional journey began in healthcare, where I worked in corporate communications, strategic marketing and sales. I later transitioned into higher education, initially teaching associate, undergraduate and graduate-level marketing courses.

Over time, I moved into academic leadership, where my focus has been on enhancing curriculum quality, ensuring courses reflect the evolving marketing landscape and improving the overall student learning experience.

What first drew you to higher education?

My move into higher education was intentional. At the time, I had two young children in elementary school and was looking for a career that offered greater work-life balance and flexibility. Teaching provided that opportunity. While I originally planned to return to the corporate sector, I quickly discovered how much I enjoyed teaching and mentoring students.

As my passion for education grew, I became involved in course development and eventually moved into higher education leadership. I firmly believe that education has the power to transform not only individuals but also the lives of those around them.

What aspects of your own education have been influential in shaping your career in academia?

Education has given me confidence and a lifelong appreciation for learning. More importantly, it taught me that a degree is only meaningful when paired with a genuine desire to pursue knowledge and personal growth.

The educational institutions and mentors who influenced me helped foster that mindset, encouraging me to continuously learn, adapt and strive to become a better version of myself. Those experiences ultimately shaped my career in academia.

What attracted you to this field of study? What keeps you excited about it?

What initially attracted me to marketing was its unique blend of human psychology, innovation, strategy and creativity. Marketing is constantly evolving as consumer behaviors, technologies and market dynamics change. That continuous evolution keeps the field exciting and provides endless opportunities to learn, adapt and innovate.

How have you found ways to effectively connect with students?

Our students come from diverse backgrounds and often balance multiple personal and professional responsibilities. The most effective way I connect with students is by leading with empathy, listening to their experiences and understanding the barriers they may be facing. Creating a supportive environment helps students feel valued and empowers them to succeed.

What brings you the greatest joy in your work at SNHU?

Knowing that the work I do ultimately helps transform the lives of our students brings me the greatest joy. Whether through curriculum improvements, student support or academic leadership, contributing to student success is incredibly rewarding.

What do you feel is unique about the faculty and students you work with?

What stands out most is the dedication and resilience of both our faculty and students. Our faculty are deeply committed to student success and continually strive to create meaningful learning experiences.

Our students bring a wealth of real-world experiences, determination and diverse perspectives to the classroom. Together, they create a dynamic and inspiring learning community.

What does SNHU’s mission to transform the lives of learners mean to you?

Interestingly, transforming lives through education has always been a personal mission of mine. Working at SNHU is especially meaningful because the university's mission aligns closely with my own values and purpose. It is a privilege to contribute to an institution that is committed to expanding access to education and helping learners achieve their goals.

Outside of work, what’s something you’re passionate about or really enjoy doing?

I enjoy gardening and have created a small tropical oasis in my backyard that I am very proud of. Gardening reminds me that meaningful growth takes time, patience, effort and consistent nurturing — much like education. I also have a four-legged furry family member named Max, who is seven years old and keeps me active, entertained and smiling every day.
