Academic Spotlight: Dr. Susan McKenzie, Senior Associate Dean of STEM Programs
Dr. Susan McKenzie believes in the power of education and creating opportunities to enhance the student experience at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU). As senior associate dean overseeing online STEM programs, she works with faculty and staff to strengthen academic programs and ensure the curriculum aligns with current industry trends.
McKenzie earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from SNHU, a Master of Science in Experimental Physical Chemistry from Boston College and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics from Simmons University.
Recently, McKenzie answered questions about her path to academia and the experiences that continue to shape her and her career in higher education.
Can you tell us about your professional background?
My career has taken an interesting path across science, technology, leadership and higher education. Before joining academia, I worked in scientific research, program management and technology-focused leadership roles. These experiences gave me a deep appreciation for the connection between technical expertise and human potential. Today, I enjoy bringing those perspectives together to help create meaningful learning experiences for students and support faculty in their important work.
What first drew you to higher education?
I was drawn to higher education because of its transformative power. Education creates opportunities, opens doors and changes the trajectory of people's lives. I found myself increasingly motivated by helping others learn, grow and achieve goals they may not have believed were possible for themselves.
What aspects of your own education have been influential in shaping your career in academia?
My education taught me the importance of curiosity, resilience and lifelong learning. Studying science challenged me to think critically and solve complex problems, while my doctoral work helped me better understand leadership, organizational change and the learner experience. Together, those experiences shaped my belief that learning is both an intellectual and deeply human endeavor.
What attracted you to this field of study? What keeps you excited about it?
I've always been fascinated by understanding how things work—whether that's scientific phenomena, data, technology or human learning. What keeps me excited today is the pace of change. Emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and evolving workforce needs create new opportunities to rethink education and help learners build skills that matter in their lives and careers.
How have you found ways to effectively connect with students?
I try to approach every interaction with empathy and curiosity. Many of our learners are balancing careers, families and significant responsibilities while pursuing their education. By listening carefully, understanding their goals and meeting them where they are, we can create learning experiences that feel both supportive and empowering.
What brings you the greatest joy in your work at SNHU?
The greatest joy comes from seeing learners discover their own potential. Whether it's a student completing a challenging degree, gaining confidence in a new skill or achieving a career goal, those moments are powerful reminders of why this work matters.
What do you feel is unique about the faculty and students you work with?
Our students bring remarkable determination, resilience and real-world experience into the classroom. Our faculty are equally committed to student success and continuously innovate to create meaningful learning experiences. Together, they form a learning community that is both supportive and inspiring.
What does SNHU's mission to transform the lives of learners mean to you?
To me, transforming the lives of learners means creating opportunities that might not otherwise exist. It means helping people see possibilities for themselves, providing the support they need to succeed and empowering them to achieve goals that can positively impact their families, careers and communities.
Outside of work, what's something you're passionate about or really enjoy doing?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and caring for our dogs. Whether it's taking them on adventures, enjoying time outdoors or simply being together at home, those moments help me stay grounded and remind me of the importance of connection, joy and balance.
