SNHU Spotlight: Pedro Borges, BS in Business Administration Grad

Pedro Borges, an SNHU 2024 graduate with his bachelor's in business administration from SNHU.Pedro Borges ‘24 always dreamed of earning his degree in the United States. After immigrating from Cape Verde to the U.S. at 18, without knowing English, he’s worked hard to achieve his goal. Now a Massachusetts resident, he’s earned his Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business Administration from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).

“It was a big, big challenge for me to come here, learn English, get myself a job... and get a chance to earn a bachelor’s degree,” said Borges.

His first job, at McDonald’s, was difficult considering the language barrier, but Borges did not let that stop him. He said he was determined to work to supplement the money his parents sent him.

“My parents used to help me and send me money because they (have) always (supported) me (so I can earn a degree),” he said. “Even from far away, they used to call me to tell me, ‘hey, you can do it.’”

After learning basic English, Borges then took a role at Walmart, where his manager suggested he enroll in an online program which allowed employees to work and further their education at the same time. The manager asked if Borges was interested.

"Oh, definitely," Borges said.

After joining the program, he applied to SNHU, which he described as a perfect fit.

“I (could) do my courses online and also work as a full-time (employee),” said Borges. “SNHU called me through every single step to get me in the right direction and to (make) me feel comfortable” he said.

Borges was quick to give a shoutout to Amanda Cook, his academic advisor, who would call him every week to make sure he felt confident moving forward.

Currently, Borges is still working with Walmart, in his new position as a digital coach.

“Right now, with this degree, I’m just going to take advantage of it and grow my career,” he said.

When Borges walked the stage and received his degree, some of his Walmart colleagues attended, including his store managers, his marketing manager, and even the manager who first encouraged him to pursue his education.

“I did have the support of all my store managers,” he said. “All these people being here, it’s amazing. I feel so satisfied.”

With his degree, Borges said he finally achieved his dream, but he’s ready for new opportunities within his field.

“I’m a person who likes challenge," he said.
