"(SNHU) was great...I met a lot of new people. It got me promoted at my job, which was the most important part."
Scott Saktanaset '14MBA knew he wanted to get out from in front of a computer screen and in front of a boardroom, and he knew he needed to expand his education to do it.
The storage solutions manager for Dell was already working for the company but wasn't satisfied writing code all day as a junior employee. He had an undergraduate degree in computer engineering and knew he needed a business education to advance his career. That's when he enrolled in Southern New Hampshire University's online Master of Business Administration program. With that in hand, Saktanaset secured the management position he wanted and also learned new ways to help out at his parents' Thai restaurant. "Southern New Hampshire University was great. It was a lot of diversity," he said. "I met a lot of new people. It got me promoted at my job, which was the most important part."
Saktanaset's online MBA focused on SNHU's entrepreneurship concentration, which helps students develop skills in research, analysis and new business opportunity development. By concentrating on entrepreneurship, Saktanaset explored models and strategies to launch and run a consulting firm, evaluated existing and possible franchise opportunities, as well as developed strategic knowledge and business skills based on the best practices of today's most successful entrepreneurs.
Going to college and later earning his online MBA was important to Saktanaset for a number of reasons. One of the biggest was to honor his parents, who are originally from Thailand and immigrated to America largely so their children would have a chance to get a world-class education. They had many small jobs over the years, he said, including selling jewelry at California fairs, working as parking lot attendants and in grocery stores before establishing their restaurant. "They've gone through so much sacrifice and I feel that just giving back a little here and there is nothing (compared) to what they've done," Saktanaset said.
Saktanaset took a mix of online and evening classes on campus. The flexibility allowed him to continue his full-time job at Dell, attend classes and still help out at his parents' restaurant, he said. Now instead of writing code all day long, Saktanaset creates marketing collateral for many of Dell's data storage products. He also does market analytics, contributes to the company's marketing and social media strategies, and writes a blog about the industry.
"It definitely got me promoted," he said of his degree. "Without my MBA, I wouldn't be able to have this management position for the product. I'd still be a software engineer looking at code on the computer screen. So I feel that with SNHU, it definitely got me where I am today."
