How to Get an Affordable Online MBA

To get an affordable online Master of Business Administration (MBA), you'll need to choose a reputable school within your budget and look for opportunities to save on tuition, like leveraging employee benefits and applying for scholarships.

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) can be a highly regarded degree in the business world — but it also may be costly depending on where and how you earn it.

If you've decided to go with an online program, that might already help you save on tuition and fees compared to a campus program. So, what else should you know if you're looking to get an online MBA without breaking the bank?

How Can You Tell If an Online MBA Program is Legitimate?

The first way to determine if an MBA is legitimate is to check if the school offering the degree is accredited. As an example, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is institutionally accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

There are also programmatic accreditations to consider. SNHU's MBA program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), for instance.

"Some programs look like a 'deal,' but you want to make sure it’s the real thing," said Angelina Paglierani, who has been a finance counselor at SNHU for over a decade.

When researching affordable online MBAs, Paglierani recommended searching for alumni on LinkedIn to see their career outcomes for yourself. And to learn more about a certain program, she said you can also connect with the school.

"You should never be afraid to reach out to admissions and ask direct questions," Paglierani said. "A legitimate school will be happy to answer them."

3 Ways to Save on Your MBA Tuition

Here are three ways you might be able to save on the cost of your MBA program.

1Find an Affordable MBA Program

Choosing a more affordable MBA program might be one of the easiest ways to save on tuition. According to the Education Data Initiative, the average cost of an MBA degree is $60,410 in total as of 2026. But there are many schools that offer less expensive options — including SNHU.

At $659 per credit and three credits per course, SNHU's 10-course MBA program costs a total of $19,770. That's less than a third of the cited average cost of an MBA program.

While deciding where to earn your MBA, consider your budget from the start.

2Use Employer Benefits

In some cases, your place of work might help you pay for a degree.

"Many employers offer tuition reimbursement programs that cover a portion of your education costs," Paglierani said.

Before you start an MBA program, be sure to check to see if you have any similar benefits available to you. You could be pleasantly surprised.

3Apply for Grants and Scholarships

Applying for scholarships and grants is another way to help with the cost of an MBA program — or any other degree. Be sure to look into opportunities at your school of choice and beyond.

"Many students overlook departmental scholarships and private foundation grants that go unclaimed," Paglierani said.

What About Financial Aid Options?

You could also consider taking out loans to finance your degree. Loans typically need to be repaid with interest over time, so it's important to understand your choices — including federal student loans via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and private loans.

Paglierani recommends exhausting your federal student loan options before considering a private loan.

"Federal loans typically offer lower interest rates and more flexible repayment plans, including income-driven options and potential loan forgiveness programs," she said. "Private loans should be a last resort."

Is an Online MBA Actually Worth It?

Whether an online MBA program is worth it can depend on you and what you do with your degree after graduating. But employers are planning to hire more MBA graduates in 2026 than they hired in 2025, according to the 2026 Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) Corporate Recruiters Survey (GMAC PDF source).

And for many working adults, the option to learn through a flexible online program is what makes earning an MBA possible in the first place.

"Online programs are often more affordable than on-campus options and allow you to keep your income — that's a double advantage," Paglierani said.

The flexibility of an online education allowed Cheri Federico'25MBA to earn her MBA from SNHU while working, and she said she was able to directly apply what she learned in her courses, too. For example, when her workplace was going through restructuring, she said her coursework was perfectly aligned.

“My last two classes were all about change management, how to change, how to handle change with your teams and all of that,” said Federico. “So I was able to directly use that right at the time that I was going through all of that at work.”

On a personal level, Federico said her MBA was definitely worth it. “It’s the best thing I ever did,” she said.
