What does it take to redefine the word “museum”? How about redefining the word “museum” in an international context, but with the stage set in the United States? Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) and the International Committee for Museology (ICOFOM) partnered in organizing an online symposium on “Defining the Museum of the 21st Century: Evolving Multiculturalism in Museums in the United States” to do just that.
ICOFOM had been going around the world holding conferences and workshops in France, China, Argentina, Brazil, Scotland, Belgium, and Russia. The aim was to include multiple voices in the International Council of Museum’s (ICOM) definition of the word “museum.”
It was also about time that the U.S. held an ICOFOM symposium. By structuring it as a virtual, live-streamed event, participants from around the world were able to connect and share their perspective on museums. Among the countries represented were: Japan, Argentina, Greece, Russia, France, Venezuela, Latvia, Peru, and China.
The organizers, each from SNHU, included: James Fennessy, former associate dean of liberal arts, Robert Denning, faculty lead of history and Dr. Yun Shun Susie Chung, team lead and adjunct history faculty concentrating on public history theses courses, who is also an International Committee for Museology member and former board member (2007-2010). The organizers consulted monthly with François Mairesse, president of ICOFOM, Bruno Brulon Soares, vice president of ICOFOM, and Anna Leshchenko, ICOFOM Study Series general secretary, on the structure and content of this event.
The one-day online symposium featured opening remarks by Deborah Disston, director of the McIninch Art Gallery at SNHU, 3 keynote speakers and 3 thematic panels with 10 presenters. Presenters offered new perspectives on what a museum is today in the U.S. and Indigenous nations. Panel themes included:
- “Nation-Building in Museums in the United States”
- “Collecting Tangible and Intangible Heritage in Museums in the United States”
- “Serving Nearby Heritage for All in Museums in the United States”
Keynote speaker Alyce Sadongei, chair of the Partnership for Native Americans, and program coordinator of the American Indian Language Institute at the University of Arizona, weighed in on Indigenous museums.
Bringing a Virtual Symposium to Life
SNHU’s role as a leading global provider of online education made the school a natural fit for this virtual event. The organizers relied heavily on existing platforms, from SNHU and ICOFOM websites to social media, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, for presenter submissions and sharing information related to the event. Internal resources, such as SNHUconnect, and announcements in online courses, along with communication through diverse museum and history associations provided additional virtual outlets to spread word of the symposium.
The symposium, presented through Adobe Connect, also featured recording of the event on YouTube and SoundCloud. A monograph is due to publish by the end of 2018, which will be digitally preserved on the ICOFOM website.
SNHU students, who represented a sizable portion of the audience, had the unique opportunity to learn from leading international museum experts. For students in programs like the MA History, Public History concentration, this enabled them to see how the knowledge and theories they’re learning in class translate to real-world (or real-museum) situations.
Presenters provided a strong representation of the diverse kinds of institutions that the current ICOM definition falls under. Perhaps most importantly, 3 key concepts were identified that will contribute to the redefinition of museums:
- Museums as a political, social and cultural institution
- The fluidity of heritage
- Inclusivity on all levels of museum functions
Museum collections were understood to be much more than just physical objects. The majority of the audience chose “community” when thinking of what a museum is, followed by the word “diversity.” The museum was seen as a place where complex issues in society should be discussed.
As a result of this partnership between SNHU and ICOFOM, these complex issues were discussed in front of a global audience.
Dr. Yun Shun Susie Chung is currently an adjunct faculty for the History/Public History graduate program and team lead of faculty for Liberal Arts for Southern New Hampshire University. She graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2002 with a doctoral degree in Archaeological Heritage and Museums, and a master’s degree in Museology from the Reinwardt Academie in The Netherlands in 1997.
From 2001 to 2007, as professor, she helped establish the Master of Science in Heritage Management program and taught in the Museum Science graduate program at the Museum of Texas Tech University, and was a professor at San Francisco State University’s (SFSU) Museum Studies graduate program. She resigned the position of associate professor at SFSU to move to Chicago, Illinois. She was board member of ICOFOM (2007-2010) and of Lubbock Heritage Society (2005-2007).
Dr. Chung was listed on the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 10th Edition Honoring Our Nations Most Respected Teachers 2005/2006. Research and projects have been manifested in articles published in international journals which include the Journal of the History of Collections, International Journal of Heritage Studies, Collections: A Journal for Museums and Archives Professionals and the International Council of Museums’ International Committee for Museology’s Study Series.
